I have to say that I am very disappointed with the quality of my Vado HD. After the number of negative experiences that I have had with this camera, I feel that my only option is to return the unit and voice my opinion and stories with you.
After reading and researching many reviews, I was excited to give the Vado HD a fair shot in being my HD pocket camera of choice for documenting my marathon training for the 2009 Seattle Rock N Roll marathon on June 27th. After running into many difficulties in formatting the default .avi movie files to an editable HD quicktime format, I finally settled on a work flow (It involved exporting the .avis to an Mpeg-4 .mov format that would allow me to edit in Final Cut Pro while keeping file sizes to a minimum). However, as is evident in my finished videos, there were a number of exposure issues with the lighter pixels upon exporting. All the blown out white pixels (results of the Vado HD sensor) would turn black in the editing software. I tried multiple formatting routes, but to no avail. I was unable to find any alternate file format that would give me full HD quality while keeping file sizes at or below the default .avis. This wouldn't be the ultimate problem that forced me to return the product.
I planned on running the marathon with the camera and document a majority of the journey with the Vado HD. Fully charging the camera and having done a number of field tests (filming while running, running with the camera in a protective belt mounted pocket, etc) I was prepared to use it in the marathon. Unfortunately, the camera shut down and wouldn't turn on after collecting less than 9 minutes of footage by mile 10. This is absolutely ridiculous. The camera promises a 2 hour battery life and barely attained 10minutes. Between shots while running, I would power down the unit. Regardless of whether this pulls more juice than standby mode, this should in NO way amount to accumulating less than 9 minutes of total footage on an empty camera with full charge.
Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed in this product and have voiced my opinion. I host a weekly internet television talk show and have also voiced my opinion there as well. If you would like to view the videos leading up to the marathon where the unit failed, feel free to visit my YouTube page at youtube.com/thesampler. There you can see the results with over-exposure.
