My daughter is turning 1 soon and so far, I've been using my Panasonic point and shoot with standard def video to capture moments. I dealt with the poor quality because I couldn't bring myself to invest in an HD camcorder due to the cost (~$500 and up) and the fact that I would also need to buy a new beefy computer to process the AVCHD files. I looked at the Flip Mino for awhile but wrote it off due to the shakiness I saw in other people's videos, but after a couple of really bad quality videos with the Panasonic, I decided I really needed something better. Between the Flip Mino and Vado, I chose to go with the Vado due to larger storage, larger viewing screen, and lower price. I was happy and anxiously awaiting for my Vado's arrival until I started reading up on point and shoots that do HD video now. To top it off, my friend had just bought the Canon SD780IS and it looked pretty sweet...extremely portable, fantastic Canon quality photos, and seemingly fantastic HD videos. So I went and bought a Canon SD780 as well and as soon as my Vado arrived, I did a side by side test shoot. The Vado didn't come close to the Canon SD780. In low light, the colors on the Vado were drab and the sound quality was horrible. Voices sounded far away and were tinny. The Canon, however, produced videos with more color and the sound came out as if people were right in front of the mic. The thing that topped off my decision to get rid of the Vado and keep the Canon was that the Vado froze up on me on the third boot up. Vaya con dios Vado. I really sat on this decision for awhile trying to rationalize getting another point and shoot, but in the end, the Canon won out with it's higher quality and then having a still camera is just another bonus.
