I cannot understand the raving reviews about the video quality of this device. If you have ever seen the opening footage of "The Wonder Years," that is pretty much what the video looks like....8mm film footage taken in the late sixties/early seventies. At first I thought perhaps I had mistakenly set it on standard video instead of HD, but no...the setting was correct, and the result was horrible. Perhaps it will please those who just want to watch what they shoot on their computer or who want to use it for uploading to You Tube, or those who really put emphasis on the portability of the unit, thus two stars instead of one. But, other than that, stick with a standard HD camcorder. (I should, in fairness, note that I am viewing the video on a large, 67-inch wide-screen HD television) Another reviewer mentioned not to expect the same quality you get on your "normal" HD camcorder, which could be the understatement of the year. I did not really expect the same quality when I bought it, but this thing does not even come close.

Another sore point is the fact that the included (in the device) video software is pretty useless unless you upgrade to (buy) the full version, which to me reeks of a "bait-and-switch" tactic. I use Corel Ulead VideoStudio 11.5, which does the job. I refuse to upgrade the included software simply out of principle.

Two other things to be aware of: 1) due to its size, even the slightest movement on your part will make it look like an earthquake hit while you were videoing, and 2) in bright sunlight, what you are viewing through the LCD screen will pretty much be a best guess...it is very difficult to see what the image is and if you are wearing sunglasses, forget about it.

My main regret is that I waited to long to test this thing out (past the 30 day return), so now I am stuck with it. Otherwise, I would have sent it back. Put whatever you would be spending on this unit toward a highly rated HD camcorder. They come in fairly small sizes these days in their own right, and you will be much more pleased with the result (by far). If you want a FLIP HD or any of those small cameras that have good HD video in a pocket size this is the one.....

bottom line is it had more hard drive space easy to use software and looks sharp even on a 52in LCD.

The only con is the uploads if you do more than one at a time take a while, but that is really the speed issue more than anything.

Totally worth it.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

I have the camera now for around a month. I used it quite a lot (like all new gadgets ;-) ) and the bottom line for me is: The camera does everything it is supposed to do. Great videos wherever u go. The only thing is that u have to hold it steady and fast movments make the picture blurry. But i guess thats the price u have to pay for ultra portable camera.
When u look for a light and small camera u can take everywhere and shoots hd videos in good quality go for the VADO HD!Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

I got mine about a week ago.... darn, I paid $31 more! But I must say I was really surprised at the quality of the videos and the stills I capture with my ACDSee software. It's also very nicely made, not cheap. It's so small and light that it adds no weight at all to my hand bag. I did get the extra battery and stand alone charger for nearly $50 more. The battery is about the same size as my mobile phone battery. It comes with a USB extension cord for use with a desktop computer, and a clear rubbery sleeve/case. It's really nice. At this price, I'd buy them for gifts.
* You do have to hold the camera as steady as possible, but the quality of the video is still good, even if a little jumpy while walking around and recording. I was concerned about the lack of stabilizer when I ordered the camera, but the video is a lot better than I expected. And, as I mentioned, the stills I capture are good size 2.6mb files, decent enough quality for a 5x7 print.
* I never installed the software that came with the camera. I have so many graphic software packages already on my computer, and because this camera captures in a compatible format and the files are in AVI format, all my current software is able to view and edit the video files.
* I find the camera easy to hold, especially with the sleeve that it comes with. The very first time I touched the control buttons, they did move faster than I expected, but not so that it took any time to get use to.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

The Creative Vado HD Camera is a very easy to use point and shoot camera. I have been making one video every day with it since my Flip MinoHD Camera broke on me, and I have really been enjoying using it. The quality seems to be better, and you have a wider lense on it, so you can get more in your shot. I highly recommend this camera. [...]

I got my Vado on Thursday, and it stopped working today. It will record videos, but it won't play them (when I push the play button, nothing happens), and I can't access the settings, which is supposed to come up when you push the trash and play buttons at the same time. These features worked yesterday, but today, nada. I've taken the battery out, I've tried to do what I think is re-format it, but that doesn't work either. I've downloaded the latest firmware and software. Nothing works. So, I've ordered a replacement and I'll pack this up and ship it back. I'll update review after I get the replacement, but for now, I have to give it a big fat thumbs down. I'm not going to repeat all that has been said previously. Couple of things that might be helpful.

1. Slow playback on PC: The requirements listed here mention Intel Pentium III 1 GHz, AMD Athlon, or equivalent with MMX support. However, the FAQ on the Creative site states you need Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ or equivalent for playback on the computer. I've got an AMD Athlon 64 x2 (dual core) 4200+ and I do notice lag in video, especially when playing through Windows Media Player. The lag is basically unnoticeable in the Vado player itself. If you got a dual core AMD you are probably going to be OK.

The way around it (besides upgrading your motherboard and CPU) is to switch from HD+ to HD or use the Vado player. You can also import the video into .wmv with 1280x720 size using the Vado soft. No issues playing back the .wmv.

2. Playstation 3 playback: Convert the video into .wmv and it looks great on your PS3.

Four stars for not using a more universal mp4 format (like the competition) that you can play in ps3 amongst other things without going through an extra step.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

After two weeks the device was no longer detected by my computer or any other computer I plugged it into. The device comes with no CD and the built-in drivers are supposed to install automatically when you plug it in.

BEWARE OF CREATIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! It really is awful. Since there is no phone number listed on their site for tech support, I had to resort to an endless stream of unhelpful back-and-forth emails. The email responses, which were generic and pre-written, seemed redundant and they never really addressed the problem I faced. Sometimes it seemed like they weren't even reading my emails at all.

I've gotten Amazon to extend my refund window so I don't have to deal with this frustration. If it had worked as well as it had for the first two weeks, well, this would have been a different story.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

I have both the Vado HD and the Flip HD. I had thought that I lost the Flip, which I loved, but I purchased the Vado because it had features the Flip did not have at the time(Mini HDMI, removable battery and 2x Zoom) also it was a good deal cheaper. Soon after I purchased the Vado I found my Flip HD-so now I have both. The Flip is very Mac Friendly, the Vado is quite the opposite. The Flip's built in software helps you import and organize your video files and is quicktime compatible. The Vado does not come with Mac compatible software so you are left to drag and drop the video files to your computers drive. Worst of all the Vado Files are in AVI format. This format is difficult to play and edit on a Mac. Final Cut does not accept the file format and neither does IMovie. That leaves the Vado camera to playback footage on your HD TV or if you use a third party software translator such as VLC you can watch the footage on your computer. Maybe Windows users can be happy with this camera, but as a Mac user I would advise not purchasing the Vado HD. I was going on vacation with my family and wanted a video camera. I was all set to get the Flip cam (HD) and was searching for the best price. I stumbled across the Vado while reading reviews and found it has a little bigger screen and lens (wider) which was cool. The bottom line however was the $129 price tag (shipped) vs. the $250+ for the Flip. SOLD!

I love it, great little camera, smaller than my blackberry (little thicker with the lens) and is so easy to use. Holds a long charge, good picture, good sound, etc. Picks up wind a little in the mic but what mic doesn't in a wind storm ;)

I would strongly recommend this camera to someone in the "webbie" cam market.

Has a "youtube" video setting that I haven't messed with, only shot in HD so far. The best part was that this came with a free HDMI cable that fits into the cam. I have it plugged in my 52" LCD tv and can just hook the cam up any time we want to watch a vid...so cool!Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

I am NOT going to repeat the good things about this camera. The problem is with the video format and supporting software. The camera is good and it records good quality video. No problem there. I am using this camera for the past three months. The software it comes with is a peace of $$IT. It is not useful at all. I have three other video editing software including Studio DV. None of them understand this video format. Only windows movie maker understand the format. Now playing back this video is whole another story. VLC player is the best video player as for as I know. But even that is unable to play this video. No luck with quicktime or real player either. Only windows media player play this video. So consider these drawbacks while purchasing this camera. For the record "I am a PC".Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

I have personally purchased 3 out of 4 of the cameras listed in my Title. I tested all of them on the following factors:

1. Weight
2. Price
3. Portability
4. Breakability
5. Color Saturation
6. Motion Focusing
7. Ease of Use
8. Closeups
9. Low Lighting Conditions
10. High Lighting Conditions

Verdict: no contest. Not even close for the others. Vado is in its own class and people should stop comparing it to those others. On top of that, it's cheaper. This is a no brainer.

I really like this camcorder!
It is handy, gives decent footage, the menus are simple and everything is pretty much hassle-free.

The only minor annoyance is in the file format. You cant edit the Videos on a mac (imovie) without converting them first. Also there is no software given to use with macs, you have to just copy over the files from the usb-mass-storage.

I'd like to see a mac version of the software at some point!

Apart from this.. solid camera - worth every dollar.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

I took into heart to get a HD camcorder that could both be used to upload to YouTube and to create my own HD home movies.

Purchased this item, along with Flip MinoHD & Sanyo Xacti... and almost kept it for good. Returned it because I demanded for more and went for the Xacti VPC-CG10 (zoom, stabilizer, flash photography, etc.)

I had this and the Flip MinoHD at the same time for a party at home for friends to tryout and lemme know what they think. Here's a quick take on the Vado from the collective:

Pros:
* Ease of use - power, record, replay, trash, directional buttons
* Wide lens (wider than Flip, with Flip, sometimes you have to step back a bit to get everything in)
* LCD screen is clear, bright & sizable (brighter and larger than Flip)
* A gel-like skin to protect the case
* USB connector doubles up as charger
* Quick to boot up
* HDMI output at 720p was awesome! (we replayed some takes from the party and it was too funny to watch what we did)

Cons:
* Case is plasticky - feels like old cell phone (they made it up with a gel skin that's included)
* Flimsy flip USB connector
* Okay in low light, good but Xacti was better

If not for the casing and connector, I would've given it a good 5-star ratingGet more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

I got one of these small cameras because I wanted to get something that I could fit into my pocket but could still give high quality video that I would enjoy the resolution later. I normally use a Sony HC7 which gives 1080i resolution and beautiful detail worthy of bluray. I read reviews about this style of camera and Vado seemed to be the best. I wasn't let down. The quality is very sharp and the resolution being less than 1080i actually makes it easy to keep HD and upload it to youtube under the file size constraints. I enjoyed the ease of using the program without having to install it, as well as easy access to the videos as a flash drive. My only disappointment was the speed of play on most computers. My computer plays it fine with a great video card and processor, but every other computer I've played the videos on have played the video slowly. It's not the camera's fault really, except for the codec, but the quality is good so I overlook it. Overall, I'd highly recommend it.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

I am a thorough evaluator of my tech purchases. Reasons I went with the Vado over the flip include:

-avi files over mp4, my own personal preference
-ability to change recording quality (SD, HD, HD+) allowing the capacity of the device to be extended, the Flip requires you to buy the HD or SD model
-VERY light, its like a feather

I would prefer a product that used an SD card instead of a hard drive and strongly considered the Kodak products. Eventually I realized they use .mov format which wasnt compatible with my media bridge and my video editing software of choice.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

This mini camcorder is awesome! I bought it about 3 weeks ago and have used it to record all kinds of activities. It has 3 quality settings (2 HD) that allow you to expand the recording time from 2 hours to 4 hours to 8 hours. I use the 4 hour setting and the quality is excellent. The sound is very clear. The only time it wasn't was when we recorded at the beach so the noise of the surf sometimes was louder than the softer voices. I have to say that I am very disappointed with the quality of my Vado HD. After the number of negative experiences that I have had with this camera, I feel that my only option is to return the unit and voice my opinion and stories with you.

After reading and researching many reviews, I was excited to give the Vado HD a fair shot in being my HD pocket camera of choice for documenting my marathon training for the 2009 Seattle Rock N Roll marathon on June 27th. After running into many difficulties in formatting the default .avi movie files to an editable HD quicktime format, I finally settled on a work flow (It involved exporting the .avis to an Mpeg-4 .mov format that would allow me to edit in Final Cut Pro while keeping file sizes to a minimum). However, as is evident in my finished videos, there were a number of exposure issues with the lighter pixels upon exporting. All the blown out white pixels (results of the Vado HD sensor) would turn black in the editing software. I tried multiple formatting routes, but to no avail. I was unable to find any alternate file format that would give me full HD quality while keeping file sizes at or below the default .avis. This wouldn't be the ultimate problem that forced me to return the product.

I planned on running the marathon with the camera and document a majority of the journey with the Vado HD. Fully charging the camera and having done a number of field tests (filming while running, running with the camera in a protective belt mounted pocket, etc) I was prepared to use it in the marathon. Unfortunately, the camera shut down and wouldn't turn on after collecting less than 9 minutes of footage by mile 10. This is absolutely ridiculous. The camera promises a 2 hour battery life and barely attained 10minutes. Between shots while running, I would power down the unit. Regardless of whether this pulls more juice than standby mode, this should in NO way amount to accumulating less than 9 minutes of total footage on an empty camera with full charge.

Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed in this product and have voiced my opinion. I host a weekly internet television talk show and have also voiced my opinion there as well. If you would like to view the videos leading up to the marathon where the unit failed, feel free to visit my YouTube page at youtube.com/thesampler. There you can see the results with over-exposure.

Buying Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black)

I bought this camera to make it easy to replace those shaky low-quality videos that my family was capturing through cell phones and pocket digital cameras. I realize that it is not a substitute for a full HD camcorder.

However, after using this device now for a few months, I have noticed some distinct pros and cons. The cons outweigh the pros, and I'd recommend against purchasing a Vado HD until the flaws are addressed.

Pros:
- Excellent battery life - I've never run out of battery, even after all-day use
- Plenty of internal storage
- Very easy to use for anyone - including recharging and downloading
- No charger needed - plus right into USB, easy to charge in car. Battery is replaceable and not sealed in.
- Decent outdoor color in good light
- Very sturdy
- Small and very convenient
- Good for closer-up full-face video, but HD is of less value here.
- Relatively cheap - got mine through Amazon Warehouse Deals. Unit came like new (resealed, but everything intact)
- Easy to post to YouTube or capture stills

Cons:
- Poor video quality in indoor settings. Why bother with HD when colors are too dark or washed out?
- Audio is horrible. Recording acoustic music with vocals in an otherwise silent setting produces very disappointing results. Good HD video with poor audio is a waste of all that disk space.
- Very limited zoom capability.
- Shaky, but nonetheless extremely difficult to mount to tripod. The rubber pull-out USB tab is on the bottom of the unit, right next to the mounting screw hole. Whe mounted to a tripod, can not sit level due to the rubber tab. Very poor design consideration - should have been on the side like the Flip.
- Very Windows-centric. I have both Win and Mac, and have found video editing difficult on Mac given the use particular codecs required.
- No mechanism to protect lens. I hate this on any device. A manual rubber cap I pop off would do the trick.

The massive amount of drive storage for HD video captured with this device is not worth the low-quality shaky hard-to-hear HD video. I plan to turn off HD on this device. For real video worth the amount of drive space required, I'm willing to pay several times the price for video and audio quality and easier image stability.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

This camera is amazing. I love the simplicity of it. There are a couple hang ups if you are a mac user. The program to take stills out of the video is only for pc's. If you want to edit the videos in imovie you have to convert them from avi to mov file.

But even with all this. i love the camera. It has great image quality, and the sound is pretty good too. We got it to record our kids and have been very happy with it.

I bought this camera because it had a top rating by a major magazine. The operation was intuitive, flawless, and very high quality video for this type of camera, comparable in my opinon to a tape non-HD or even better. It is 720p. It did well in managing light as well. One caveat is that it's so small, it's easy to move it a lot while capturing, so without a tripod the video although high quality, can be too jerky. That's not the fault of the camera, it's inherent in anything this small. As to ease of use, simplicity, quality, it's a good value and a must-have if you want something small. Hold it still or put it on a tripod and you'll get good videos. Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

Very small, included everything, software updates are easy to get (check from the included software).

2 different charging mode, You can speed up the charging by turn to quick charge mode - which doesn't show a connection on your PC any more.( this might be the root cause why some people are having problems, read the manual!)

I love the wide angle lenses, it is good for both indoor and outdoor. Keep in mind, it's not a $1000 camcorder. When I opened the box and saw the size of the camcorder and the off the rack type packaging, I was prepared to be disappointed. Was I ever wrong. Within minutes I was shooting video and doing the playback....it was that easy. I still cannot believe the resolution and accurate color in the videos. It took awhile to get used to the small buttons for delete, playback and zoom, but I have no problem finding them now. Only negative in my opinion is the weak microphone volume, which can be compensated for when using my PC and TV speakers on playback. As a mom of two young kids I didn't want to lug out my big video camera to catch every moment. The Vado is small enough to keep in my purse. It takes good video and is very easy to use. I would recommend it to my friends. The product produces videos with good quality, it is very slim and easy to use.

However, it does not have a lens cap, this made this product less attracting. If I knew this, I will not buy it at all..

I can't imagine to keep cleaning the lens while recording... very inconvenient.

I hope they can have "lens cap" or "lens protector" later, otherwise, I will not use it at all...Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

Two completely different experiences in one day.

First - software launches flawlessly on one computer.

Second - on #2 computer reads "USB device unrecognized." I did multiple re-boots, attempted to re-load firmware & software, etc. for two hours. I ended up disconnecting the battery to restart then running computer in safe mode to get things working.

Lesson: Disable anything that may try to read the device before plugging in.

Per the camera; For $100 more you get the fully functional camera of your dreams. This camera is very limited but works for those "spontaneous" occasions when you don't want to point a camera. A $150 "style" accessory.

PROS: Rapid charge, cables, quick turn on. Shows time & battery remaining easily. Minimal confusion.

NEXT MODEL: Do an optical zoom, even with a manual slider, stereo mics. Allow for taking video while wall charging. Include flash card slot. Needs better color rendering, stablizer, disc based improved software, and a kickstand. Super extra: have a digital level on screen to show when even.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

That was the first compact camera that i bought. The form factor is great - fits your pocket. The USB cable goes into the cam coder itself is very handy. The camera charges thru the USB. The video quality is 720p, whicih is still great, but not amazing. It's a lot better than the videos from any my point-and-shoot cameras. Overall, i believe it's a great buy for the money, yet another device i'll carry with me on my trips.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

After a month of use I can tell you this is a very good camera. It takes excellent video. It is easy to use and it fits in your packet. All you need is a good light, steady hands and you can make videos like a pro. There are couple things that need improvement:

1. Filming in the low light is almost useless.
2. Shaking hands is a problem.
3. Included software is limited.

I use both a Mac and a PC. I have no problem with the action or quality of video from the Vado HD itself, although I wish Creative Labs actually had the extra battery available. After this amount of time, they should. My complaint is primarily with the camera's use with a Mac. I had to try four different downloads to find a converter that actually worked so I could use the camera with iMovie. Still, the conversion is a small pain and a slow extra step in the process. Hopefully the new Snow Leopard OS will accept the camera's codec and wrapper directly. I find the software that comes on the camera pretty useless for video editing. The only other part of the camera itself I find slightly frustrating are the joystick buttons. Three of the four need a light touch, while the down button needs a much heavier touch, so that it doesn't usually work the first time when you need it.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black) Best Quality

My daughter is turning 1 soon and so far, I've been using my Panasonic point and shoot with standard def video to capture moments. I dealt with the poor quality because I couldn't bring myself to invest in an HD camcorder due to the cost (~$500 and up) and the fact that I would also need to buy a new beefy computer to process the AVCHD files. I looked at the Flip Mino for awhile but wrote it off due to the shakiness I saw in other people's videos, but after a couple of really bad quality videos with the Panasonic, I decided I really needed something better. Between the Flip Mino and Vado, I chose to go with the Vado due to larger storage, larger viewing screen, and lower price. I was happy and anxiously awaiting for my Vado's arrival until I started reading up on point and shoots that do HD video now. To top it off, my friend had just bought the Canon SD780IS and it looked pretty sweet...extremely portable, fantastic Canon quality photos, and seemingly fantastic HD videos. So I went and bought a Canon SD780 as well and as soon as my Vado arrived, I did a side by side test shoot. The Vado didn't come close to the Canon SD780. In low light, the colors on the Vado were drab and the sound quality was horrible. Voices sounded far away and were tinny. The Canon, however, produced videos with more color and the sound came out as if people were right in front of the mic. The thing that topped off my decision to get rid of the Vado and keep the Canon was that the Vado froze up on me on the third boot up. Vaya con dios Vado. I really sat on this decision for awhile trying to rationalize getting another point and shoot, but in the end, the Canon won out with it's higher quality and then having a still camera is just another bonus. My brother-in-law purchased this product and when I saw the great footage he was able to take and the ease of use, I too decided to get one. I waited until a great sale came along and got it for about $130. I have never felt limited by the 2 hour time frame, it is so easy to upload the footage, simply plug into a usb of a computer. No downloading software, no complicated instructions. I love catching footage of my son and sharing it with people on our blog. The device even allows you to take still pictures from your footage. You can take 30 consecutive shots and in that 30 you are bound to get one GREAT pic! I would highli recommend this product.Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black) Top Quality

I own both the Vado and now the Vado HD. The reason for this purchase was something small and easy to carry. Over the years I have had video cameras and never use them because you don't want to carry them everywhere on your vacation. These devices are awesome when it comes to portability.

As soon as I opened the box I tried it out. I was a bit worried because of some of the reviews but I am relieved that the Vado HD beat my expectations in every way! Light, Compact, Great Quality, Easy to Use!

Keep in mind that you are buying an inexpensive (not cheap) pocket video camera. You are not going to get the high end Sony quality - you get a good picture that you can keep and share. The Vado HD is a step up from the previous version of the Vado - but I am keeping both! When you are out with friends you can hand off the other one and get video from another person perspective (if you are taking video, how often are you IN the video)!

I got this as a "deal of the day" for $129 but I would have paid more. Keep in mind that in 6-8 months something NEW and BETTER will come along!Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

I've had my Vado for one month and find myself using it all the time. It is a great little pocket cam that is so small you can carry it everywhere (and I do). Amazing video in all lighting situations. I'm particularly impressed that the images are a lot steadier than with my old Mini DV cam. Plus it comes with a rechargeable battery and all the cords to view on computer or TV. Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black) Review

The Creative Labs Vado HD is a very nice portable video recorder. This device is greatly improved over the original Creative Labs Vado, and I would probably say that this device is the best compact HD recording you can buy for the money. The list price is high, and the poor software and the fact that there is no optical zoom keeps it from being an absolute slam dunk.

The biggest shortcoming that the Creative Vado has is shared by most other compact video recorders. The included software is extremely slow when you have to actually use it to convert or combine videos. But you can definitely use this device for home movies, video blogs, YouTube or just about anything else. Just be prepared to use a different video software.

Before I got the Creative Vado, I had already spent a good amount of time with the Flip MinoHD Camcorder. I was happy with that device, but had heard plenty of hype that the Vado HD was going to be "better." I was naturally skeptical but the Vado HD has won me over. This device features a new improved lens that makes even standard definition videos look extremely good. The improved recording capacity is enough to capture a complete concert. And despite what the device specs say about having a 2 hour battery life, I have gotten more than 3 and 1/2 hours of continuous recording out of a single battery charge. Even better is that the stand-by charge lasts for more than a week. That means that you don't have to worry about recharging it every night if you want to have it by the ready. It will hold the charge so that when you need it, it's ready to go.

PROS:

+ Greatly improved lens produces much better quality video than the original Creative Vado; video quality is very good even when set to standard definition
+ Internal storage capacity of 8GB can capture 2 hours of HD+ video or 4 hours of standard definition (SD) video - Twice the HD recording time of the MinoHD, which gives you 1 hour
+ Li-ion battery holds a great charge while off and lasts longer than listed 2 hour battery life while recording
+ Rechargeable battery is easily swapped and replaced, while the MinoHD's internal battery requires factory replacement or warrantee-voiding hacks
+ Easy to use controls are simple to learn, and easy to teach to others
+ Microphone sensitivity produces good quality audio
+ Records high quality HD video in 720p (1280 x 720) displayed in 16:9 widescreen
+ 2 inch LCD versus the 1.5 inch LCD of the MinoHD makes it easier to see what you are shooting
+ Compact and light-weight so it's easy to transport in your purse or pocket
+ Flexible USB 2.0 connector, along with an extender, makes it easy to download videos to any computer or get a quick charge
+ Body seems to have improved durability versus the original Vado as well
+ Good light sensors are great for recording in low-light or changing light environments (think concerts)
+ Includes support for a decent set of formats, with standard H.264 AVI video
+ MP4 video compression allows you to keep files small and copy them faster
+ Software drivers install automatically; works with Mac OS X, Linux, Windows XP, Vista 32 bit and Vista 64 bit with no problems
+ Includes a decent set of accessories (HDMI cable, silicone case), a very nice change from most similar products
+ HDMI cable lets you play videos directly to your HDTV
+ Silicone cover provides a good comfortable rubberized grip
+ Good "low-battery" indicator gives you plenty of time to finish recording before the unit powers down

CONS:

- Included muvee software is SLOW if you have to edit, combine or render videos using the built-in software only (For example, when you are at a family get-together and you want to leave the video before you go home)
- Included software will also limit you to combining 3 clips and try to "up-sell" you to the pro version
- List price pits this unit against digital cameras that capture photos and video
- Lack of an SD memory card expansion slot limits total recording capacity
- Lack of optical zoom due to fixed lens with 2X digital zoom (internal zoom lenses are possible and some cameras like the Nikon S52 have them; Still the digital zoom works well enough that it might fool some people into thinking it's an optical zoom)
- Plastic threaded tripod connector not as durable as the metal threaded connector on the MinoHD
- The tab for the USB dongle on the bottom does make it harder to stand on its own (it's not always possible to carry a mini tri-pod)
- The power button on the side is the only button that isn't intuitive when training others how to use the device (barely sticks out and hard to see with the silicone case on)
- There doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the LCD while recording to increase battery life (if somebody has figured out how, please post a comment)

OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES:

~ Reasonably priced spare batteries that can be charged as a backup for extended recording on the go
~ Optional wall charger allows you to plug the USB cable into an outlet
~ Optional AV cable allows you to hook up the unit to non-HD TVs and receivers
~ Good collection of third-party cases, lanyards, and tri-pods available

SOFTWARE

While it's easy to copy videos from the device to your computer, as you can tell I really don't like the included software. While I have plenty of video editing software on some of my computers, I don't have it on all of them. Furthermore, sometimes when you are capturing a family video you want to quickly edit it to leave it with your family. I am too busy to be sure that I will remember to edit and send a video that I recorded a week after the fact. I tried to quickly edit 30 minutes of video to leave for a relative and doing everything took hours. By the end I wished I had brought my own laptop with me.

So if you have to do editing on the go, just try to record as few files as possible and then copy them to the machine rather than doing tons of editing with the software. Remember this software limits you to combining 3 clips. Any more than that and they try to sell you the "premium" version.

I was able to edit basic videos using Corel Ulead VideoStudio 11.5 Plus, though I have also used Pinnacle Studio Moviebox Ultimate and Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack in the past. I primarily have been recording standard definition with this camera, but once I got the right software codecs loaded Ulead had no trouble with the HD Videos either. They now have Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 which is a newer version of the software which replaces Ulead. I had less luck with Microsoft Movie Maker, which worked but seemed equally as slow with large movies or multiple clips. Apple iMovie seems to handle everything you throw at it if you're a Mac user.

Video editing software is a very personal choice. I tried as best I could to come up with a recommendation, but I think the best strategy is to test out the free trials for the various options and choose the one that seems most intuitive for you. The short end of the story is that you should be prepared to use some other video-editing software because what is included here is really only useful for copying videos out of the device to your computer.

CONCLUSION

I really like this device. If I had gotten this before the MinoHD, I might not have upgraded to that model. You could do a lot worse than the Vado HD. The minor limitations this device faces are pretty standard for portable video recorders. The improved lens really makes a huge difference, and it's hard not to notice it: it literally sticks out from the profile of the player case. This unit is highly recommended. Just plan on downloading a bunch of trial video editing software so that you can pick one that works best for you.

Enjoy.

Pros:

- 8GB of internal memory to store 2 hours of video on the highest quality setting
- Wide angle lens
- Decent color reproduction
- Comfortable soft rubber feel
- High quality video for the price and size
- Compact and light weight (convenient to take almost anywhere)
- Easy to copy movies to computer (built in USB connector)
- Comes with USB extension cable
- Comes with HDMI cable to play videos on your HDTV directly from the unit
- Easy to chop up the videos using Vado Central (comes free with the unit)
- Microphone picks up audio much better than expected (can here sounds from every direction)
- Extremely simple to use
- Comes with free H.264 video codec, but I prefer ffdshow-tryouts on SourceForge for better performance and customization

Cons:

- Fixed lens with 2X digital zoom only (no optical zoom)
- Does not come with a lanyard
- Optional lanyard is a bit difficult to install
- No expansion slot for an external memory card
- Microphone has a low volume feedback noise in recordings (more noticeable in quiet scenes)
- Battery life states 2 hours, but realistically it's more like 1 hour 40 minutes
- Unit will sometimes freeze when plugging into the computer (must remove battery from unit to get it working again)
- Video playback from unit to HDTV causes audio to slightly distort on high pitch sounds (does not occur when playing back from computer)
- Very bright lights such as the sun will cause skin tones to be slightly yellow
- Free H.264 codec did not work on an older laptop running Windows XP Home, but worked fine on a newer computer running Windows XP Professional
- Tripod connector on unit can easily be broken if tripod is over tightened (due to plastic tripod connector on unit)

Comments:

This camcorder is definitely worth the money. I recommend using the clear skin which comes with it to help prevent it from getting scuffed up. Also, don't forget to upgrade the firmware and install the Vado Central application update on the unit.

I recommend purchasing a small carry case with belt loop, lanyard, composite A/V cable (unit comes with HDMI cable), digtal camera tripod, and spare battery.

If you have the clear skin installed, be sure to push the composite A/V cable in all the way. Otherwise you will receive garbage on the screen.

I only had the unit freeze a few times when plugging into my computer running Linux. This hasn't occur yet when plugging into my system running Windows.

Overall, I am very impressed by this unit.

Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black)

I was initially hesitant on purchasing this product but read a review on chris.pirillo.com that compared this products video quality to the other 2 competitors.

I purchased this product from one of Amazons resellers and had it in hand within 48 hours while using the free shipping.

In a span of 25 minutes I was able to open the package, installed the pre-charged battery, shot a couple of short videos of my kids, downloaded the video onto my computer, created an account on www.vimeo.com, uploaded the video and sent announcements to my friends. In another 5 minutes I was able to teach my wife how to use it. Yes it is that easy to use.

The video is stunning for the price point. (Considering I spent $1,200 for a 1080i cam 2 years ago this price is amazing). The viewing angle is great and it looks good after downloading.

The included video editor is not much of an editor but is suitable for trimming the videos.

Some people complain about the silicon cover, but at least it came with one. My Gorilla tripod hasn't arrived yet so I don't know if the USB tab will interfere, if it does i will just trim it as necessary. I like that the usb port is flexible and that it has a small magnet to keep it closed. The LCD was viewable outside on a sunny day.

I am very pleased with this product however it is not a full featured camera replacement. I was able to "sell it to the wife" by saying that it is like comparing a point & shoot camera to a DSLR. One is more mobile for the candid shots and the other is more for events.

I hope you find this review helpful! Get more detail about Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black).

Where To Buy Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder with 8 GB Video Storage and 2x Digital Zoom (Black)

The best thing about these mini camcorders are that they're easy to use. My ten year old started making her own "TV show" seconds after I handed her the Vado. This camcorder is really small, like half a deck of cards so it's easy to carry around and pull out in an instant. So whether you want to catch your friend's goofy stunt or your baby's first words it makes it really easy. And then just like that you pull out the USB cord and upload the video directly to youtube (by the way you can set privacy options so only your family or selected friends see the video). Or put it there for the world to see and instant fame (or shame, depending on the video!)

Here's what I like about this camcorder, I will also compare with Flip MinoHD wherever applicable:

-- Takes HD video (720p) in 16:9 ratio, picture is very sharp especially when viewed on a computer screen or your HDTV. It even comes with an HDMI cable which allows you to see super sharp videos.
-- 2 inch LCD screen (let me say it again, TWO inches!) it's a HUGE plus over MinoHD. It is so much easier to see what you're shooting rather than squinting into the MinoHD. And playback is fun too, most times people want to see the video the minute you're done shooting and this really allows you to show it off.
-- Video time is 2 hours (8GB) in HD, longer in lower res. The video quality is excellent with really natural colors, I am pretty impressed how nice the videos look compared to the earlier Flip cameras and to me it looks even better than MinoHD.
-- Rechargeable battery that you can take out and replace easily (unlike MinoHD) so you can even have a backup
-- You can buy a wall charger (wall plug with USB slot) and hook this camcorder to an outlet if you don't have your laptop handy for charging. I just use the one that came with iPhone/iPod
-- Silicon skin to protect your camcorder comes in the box, however, I don't like it and just bought a slim case instead which also protects the lens.
-- To upload your video you just pull out the USB 2.0 cord and plug it into your computer like a mini external drive. You can then directly upload your video to youtube, myspace or any other video-sharing website without having to transfer it to your computer. Or just upload it to your computer.
-- Super sleek and easy to carry in your front pocket or jeans. It is really slim and pretty rugged especially with the silicone skin. It's very light, so even drops don't seem to damage it.
-- Controls are super-easy, really child's play
-- Good performance in low light - although one wishes for some sort of extra light source in a really dark room, this camcorder performs above average in low light as does the Mino HD
-- Sound is pretty good especially given the size. The sound syncs well with the picture too. The videos I shoot with my digital camera sometimes go out of sync but not with the Vado.
-- Easily charged through your computer, has a Li-ion battery
-- Creates MP4 video with good compression so the files are not huge like the one from your digital camera, it makes loading files into youtube or your computer fast and easy.
-- Software drivers are on the camcorder drive and it works with Windows XP and Vista (32 and 64 bit) and even Mac. In case of any problems the Vado site has additional drivers available.
--The camcorder works perfectly with Mac and QuickTime for viewing your videos as well as Windows Media Player or any other popular player.
--Comes with HDMI Cable that you can directly hook up to your HDTV (a big plus!)

Here's what I don't like:

-- Zoom is limited at 2X digital zoom. It's great for making videos of people right in front of you but if you're trying to record a performance from a distance prepare to be disappointed (same as MinoHD)
-- Given basic controls it's also difficult to zoom in very smoothly but I find it slightly easier than with MinoHD. Vado is best for mostly fixed focus videos, the zoom is pretty limited anyway.

This camcorder was selling for lesser than MinoHD in the beginning but then went up in price as favorable product raves started coming in. You can't expect this camcorder to replace your high end Sony digi-camcorder but it's the best choice for those fun, spur of the moment videos that even your kids can shoot with ease. And it holds up well in rainy conditions too.

The first thing I noticed after removing the unit from its box was some corrosion around the lens. After inserting the battery I attempted to charge the unit. After a few seconds the fully charged icon appeared in the center of the screen (though not where the instructions say it should in the upper right corner). Thinking it couldn't be fully charged yet I left it charging overnight. The next day the unit still would not power up. I looked for the help on the company's website. The only option was email. After I sent an email describing the problem I received an automated response stating the the average response time was 24 hours. After waiting a day I received an answer telling me to do what I had already done, plug it into my computer (essentially repeating the instructions that came with the unit). I immediately answered back that I had already done this. 5 hours later another response came telling me to log into their site for return instructions and repair fees would be assessed. THIS ALL WITH A BRAND-NEW UNIT!!!! The service dept must be in China because all emails arrived between 11:00pm and 4:00am.
